What to Know Before Getting a Vertical Clit Hood Piercing

What to Know Before Getting a Vertical Clit Hood Piercing

A vertical clit hood piercing (VCH) is exactly what it sounds like: a piercing that goes up and down the clitoral hood.

That little bit of pleasure on top of your vulva, between your lips, is called the glans clitoris. The hood is the thin fold of skin that sits over it.

Are there sexual benefits?

Yup!

Most people get a VCH piercing because they think it will make them more attractive.

There is study to back up the claims that people who have this type of clit piercing get a lot of pleasure from it.

For your own good

Putting some bling on your clit can make you feel better about your sexual and genital self-image, just like putting jewelry on any other part of your body.

In 2019, a study found that being satisfied with the way your genitalia look was connected to more enjoyable and effective sex life and a better feeling about your body in general. That’s it.

No matter what other people think, a pierce between the clit hood and the glans makes direct touch more stimulating.

This is great because most people with a vulva need to stir their clit to come.

A lot of people who have a VCH agree that it makes almost every sex act more enjoyable, from dry humping and stroking (alone or with someone else) to oral sex and vaginal contact.

People who use VCH also say that it takes “boring” sex situations to a whole new level of orgasmicness.

A lot of them say they even get high from doing things like dancing or crossing their legs that aren’t sexual.

For the sake of your partner

Let’s be honest: most people think the best thing about someone is when they are proud of their sexuality. It’s also very exciting to be around someone who is enjoying sheet-twisting pleasure, which will eventually rub off on everyone.

And then there’s the way something looks, which for some partners is enough to get really excited.

If it’s good for their health, it depends on how they’re sitting and what they’re putting between their legs. For example, scissoring or any other action that puts your vulvae on top of each other can make clit stimulation better for both of you.

Can anyone get one?

The anatomy of most people with vulvas makes them good candidates for a VCH.

It’s important that the hood is deep enough and that your pubic mound doesn’t put too much pressure on the hood. This can happen if you have extra fat or saggy in that area.

Your piercer will still make sure that a VCH will work for you, but you can do it yourself ahead of time by sliding a cotton swab that has been greased under your hood. You passed the cotton swab test and have enough depth if most of the cotton end fits under.

A VCH might not work for you if only part of the cotton tip fits under your hood.

Once more, a piercer can make sure.

Finally, you might want to think twice about getting a VCH if your clit is very sensitive. Some people may find clit stim too much, even though it’s nice.

What are my jewelry options?

Most of the time, curved barbells are used for VCH piercings because they fit the shape of your clit. Because they are tucked away and out of the way, they can rest easily while you go about your day.

You could also use straight barbells or bands with beads.

What material should I choose?

There are a lot of choices, but the Association of Professional Piercers (APP) says you should stick to materials made for jewelry.

They say that real 14-karat gold or higher is best, as well as implant-grade metals that have been accepted by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) or ASTM International.

Stainless steel

This is the most popular choice because it’s cheap and safe for most people, even those who are allergic to nickel. There is some nickel in it, but it releases at a slow rate that is generally not a problem unless your reaction is very bad. Check to see if the pieces meet ASTM-F138 or ISO-5832-1 standards.

Titanium

Titanium costs more than stainless steel, but it doesn’t contain nickel and is safe for people with allergies. Try to find titanium jewelry that meets ASTM-F136 or ISO 5832-3 standards.

Solid 14-karat gold or higher

Going gold has some good points. You can pick from yellow, white, or rose gold, and it’s safe for most people. Make sure to stay away from gold-plated jewelry, though, because the plating can flake off and reveal other metals, like nickel, below.

How much does the piercing usually cost?

Most of the time, getting a VCH or other genital piercing done costs between $50 and $100. But this can go up a lot based on the company and where you are.

Some other things to think about are:

Jewelry: Jewelry isn’t usually included, and it can cost anywhere from $20 to $60, based on what kind of metal you pick.

Evaluation: Before any kind of vaginal piercing, a reputable piercer will do an exam to make sure the person is a good candidate. Some add the fee for the assessment to the price of the piercing.

Tip: If you’re pleased with the service, it’s polite to leave a 20% tip.

How is this piercing done?

When you get a VCH piercing, here’s what to expect:

Paperwork and evaluation: There will be some forms to fill out, including a waiver, and you will need to show ID. The piercer will do a fit test if you haven’t already had one to make sure you can handle the piercing and the metal you want.

Disinfecting: Surgical scrub will be used to clean the area by your piercer.

Marking: The piercer will mark the spot and ask for your OK before they do the work.

Piercing: The piercer will hold your skin up and slide a needle-holding tube under your hood. The needle will then be pushed through the mark. After that, they’ll put the metal in.

Cleanup: The person who pierced you will clean the hole and stop any blood. Certain amounts of blood will flow, but not too much. A panty-liner is a good thing to wear to keep your underwear safe.

Will it hurt?

It’s going to hurt because you’re cutting your genitalia, but everyone feels pain differently.

Because the flesh is so thin, the VCH is one of the least painful ways to pierce your genitalia. The sharp pain only lasts a second, too.

Getting enough rest and relaxing can help you feel less pain.

Are there any risks involved?

With a VCH, the chance of getting an illness or hurt is low, but it is still possible. This is true for any body piercing.

Some of these are:

Allergic reaction: Nickel or other metals could make you sick if you are allergic to them. This is why it’s important to use implant-grade gold or gold that is 14 karats or higher.

Infection: Since a new piercing is an open wound, you could get an illness if you’re not careful. Tetanus, HIV, and hepatitis B and C are just a few of the blood-borne diseases that can be spread by dirty needles. With clean tools, a trustworthy piercer, and the right treatment, you can avoid getting an infection.

Tearing: Oh no, right? If a piercing gets caught on something, it could tear (don’t overlook the strength of a ball of toilet paper!) or if you or your partner treat it badly.

Embedding: If your metal is too short, skin can grow over it.

Rejection: A cutting When your body sees the metal as strange and tries to push it out, this is called rejection. At first, you might feel like your piercing is getting closer to your skin. Your skin may start to thin and even open up over time.

Botched piercing: Yes, it does happen, which is why it’s so important to find a piercer with a good reputation and a lot of experience. If they don’t do it right, they might pierce the wrong part of your clit, like your glans instead of your hood.

What’s the healing time like?

While no two hoods are the same, VCH piercings usually heal fully in 4 to 8 weeks.

How long it takes to heal relies on how much tissue you have, how your clit and hood are shaped, and how well you take care of yourself afterward.

What kind of aftercare is involved?

If you want to take good care of your piercing, use common sense. For example, it’s not a good idea to ride a bike, a horse, or anything else right after getting a VCH.

Having said that, you can get back on the horse (and have sex) as soon as you feel ready. Trust me, your clit will lead you.

Here are some more things you should and shouldn’t do during the healing process.

As you heal, do these things:

  • When you pierce something, be careful.
  • Before you touch the piercing, wash your hands with warm water and soap.
  • You can spray or soak the piercing in saline solution at any time, even after having sex.
  • Take a shower every day.
  • Do this slowly with a clean towel or paper towel.
  • Place a barrier between you and your partner or sex toy.
  • Lube should be water-based if you use it.
  • Get out of clothes that are wet or sweaty right away.
  • Always keep your jewelry on.

Do not do these things while you are healing:

  • Do not play with or let anyone else play with your piercing.
  • You shouldn’t let your partner’s mouth or body fluids touch it.
  • When you have sex, use barrier methods.
  • No one, not even you, should touch it with dirty hands.
  • When you wash that area, don’t use strong soaps or paper towels.
  • You shouldn’t go into lakes, pools, hot tubs, or any other piece of water until you’re fully better.
  • Wear clothes that don’t rub against your device.
  • Do not take off your jewelry.

A hint of a problem

A VCH piercing doesn’t pose a high risk of illness or other problems, but it’s still important to know how to tell if something is wrong.

Things to watch out for:

  • increasing pain, swelling, or redness around the piercing
  • bleeding that doesn’t stop
  • skin that’s hot to the touch
  • foul-smelling discharge or pus
  • flu-like symptoms, such as fever and body aches

Even if you think something is wrong, don’t take off your jewelry. This could close up the hole and keep the bacteria inside. Instead, you should see your piercer or doctor right away.

Changing the jewelry

See your piercer to change the metal once you’re fully healed. It’s best to have a pro show you the right way to do a swap the first time. You might be able to do it on your own later.

Retiring the piercing

Most clit hood piercings get smaller and close up quickly.

Take off the metal (or have your piercer do it) if you’re sure you want to get rid of your piercing. Just make sure you do it after it’s completely fixed.

What to do next

If you want to get pierced, you need to find a reputable piercer who has done private piercings before.

One you’ve chosen a few, set up a meeting with the potential piercer so you can see the studio and ask questions in person.

Make sure you:

  1. Check to see how clean they are and ask how they sterilize their equipment.
  2. talk about any worries you have
  3. Check to see if you’re a good fit for a VCH by getting evaluated.
